Our Profiles

a huge list

What are Profiles?

As we explain on the how-to page, profiles are not secret files we're having about people, where we compile information about them without their consent. Rather, they are "nodes" in our bibliographical database, standardised names of authors and editors. We use this same database for the "Swiss philosophical microcosm" and for compiling the "mentioned-on" boxes on the personal profiles. In this way, we hope to make it easier for everyone to navigate the portal and find the content they are interested in.

The Trouble with Names

For the bibliography, we try to treat prefixes correctly: sorting "DeRosset" and "Van Cleve" under "D" and "V", but "van Inwagen" under "I" and "de Muralt" under "M". We also try to distinguish Spanish and Portuguese double names. We do not make these subtle distinctions here.

What we do try to do, however, is to get maiden names right: in the US, they sometimes become a part of the first name, as in "Marcus, Ruth Barcan". Whether or not that is the case seems to be largely a personal choice: we have tried to get this right: if you spot an error, please tell us.
