Warum Philosophie studieren?

Dazu gehören beispielsweise: Was ist wahr? Was können wir wissen? Was sollen wir tun?

  • Analyse von Texten, Theoriegebäuden, Strukturen und Ideen;
  • kritische Auseinandersetzung mit anderen Meinungen, auch solchen, die einem fremd oder unvernünftig erscheinen;
  • folgerichtige, logische Argumentation, Aufzeigen von Begründungen, Zusammenhängen, Widersprüchen und übersehenen Details;
  • Hervorbringen von konstruktiven und gut begründeten Vorschlägen, Denken "out of the box", Originalität und Einfallsreichtum;
  • Offenheit gegenüber ungelösten Fragen, Umgang mit eigenem Nichtwissen, intellektuelle Bescheidenheit;

Quel métier peut-on exercer ?

  • analyse de textes, d'édifices théoriques, de structures et d'idées ;
  • examen critique d'autres opinions, y compris celles qui semblent lointaines, mêmes farfelues ou déraisonnables ;
  • raisonnement logique et cohérent, mise en évidence de justifications, relations, contradictions et détails négligés ;
  • production de propositions constructives et bien fondées, réflexion "out of the box", originalité et ingéniosité ;
  • ouverture aux questions non résolues, gestion de sa propre ignorance, modestie intellectuelle ;

  • Capacità di analisi del testo, costruzione dei cosiddetti "edifici teorici", strutture e idee;
  • Discussione critica delle altre opinioni, anche di quelle che sembrano strane o irragionevoli;
  • argomentazione logica, evidenziando ragioni, connessioni, contraddizioni e dettagli trascurati;
  • Capacità di produrre proposte costruttive e ben giustificate, originalità e intraprendenza (il famoso "pensare fuori dagli schemi");
  • Confronto con domande irrisolte, e quindi con la propria ignoranza e successivo sviluppo dell'umiltà intellettuale;

Philosophy deals with the profound questions of our lives. These include, for example: What is true? What can we know? What should we do? Do we have free will or are we determined by our nature? Do only humans have dignity or animals too? Who are WE anyway?

As interesting as such questions seem to many people, some still shy away from studying philosophy. The reason is widespread - and quite justified: What can one actually do after studying philosophy? What profession can one take up?

The situation seems less clear in philosophy than in other subjects: Those who study medicine know with a high degree of certainty that once they graduate, they will practise as a doctor, thanks to the university training they have completed. There is nothing comparable in philosophy. The career paths of trained philosophers are extremely varied and often lead far away from the concrete contents of the discipline. However, this does not mean that the training is of no use. Philosophy teaches certain basic skills that can be translated into a wide variety of fields of activity. These include, among others, the following skills:

  • analysis of texts, complex theories, structures and ideas;
  • critical discussion of other opinions, even those that seem alien or unreasonable;
  • reasoning logically, pointing out justifications, connections, contradictions and overlooked details;
  • producing constructive and well-reasoned proposals, thinking "out of the box", originality and resourcefulness;
  • openness to unresolved questions, dealing with one's own ignorance, intellectual humility;
  • writing down complex thoughts into an understandable form; reviewing and revising the written presentation.

Detailed information can be found in the brochure "Why Study Philosophy", as well as on our dedicated portal pages, available in German, French and Italian.

With these skills, careers in universities and schools, in the media (e.g. journalism and public relations), in the cultural sector (cultural management, museums, etc.) as well as in the library and publishing sector (e.g. editing) are possible, as well as careers in higher administration, in science management, in the diplomatic service, in associations, in management consultancies, in foundations and international organisations.
