A SWISS-SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
Outline
Locus standi, or standing, is a fundamental feature of legal procedure at both national and international levels. Requiring the establishment of a connection to the alleged harm of a legal action, it is designed to exclude so-called unworthy actions and vexatious litigants. In doing so, however, it carries with it the capacity to exclude the voices of those in most need of being heard. The aim of this international workshop is to investigate the legal, political and ethical aspects of locus standi at both national and international levels.
Provisional Dates and Venues
The Workshop has a unique format. There will be two meetings, held two weeks apart. The first will be held in Geneva, 13-14 June 2009. The second will be held in Glasgow, 27-28 June 2009. Broadly speaking, though not strictly enforced, the emphasis of the first workshop will be on the international level (including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and a number of other international tribunals) and supra- national level (the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights), while the second will focus on the national level (including, principally, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada, and focusing, for example, on the jurisprudence of certain national courts as to universal jurisdiction and public interest litigation).
Leading Organisers
The two leading organisers are Professor Emilios Christodoulidis, University of Glasgow, and
Maksymilian Del Mar, University of Edinburgh and the University of Lausanne.
International Collaboration
The workshop seeks to bring together Swiss- and Scottish-based national and international lawyers, and legal, political and moral philosophers. The collaboration will be facilitated by the involvement of the two networks: the Suisse-Romande Association for Practical Philosophy and the Scottish Network for Legal and Political Philosophy. The workshops will be open not only to well-established practitioners and academics, but also doctoral and early career researchers.
Outcome
Apart from facilitating collaboration between members of Swiss- and Scottish networks, the workshop will result in an edited collection, to be published by a major press. The edited collection is scheduled for publication in mid-2010.
Contact
Please contact Emilios Christodoulidis or Maksymilian Del Mar for more information or to express your interest in participating. A more detailed proposal will be circulated towards the end of 2008.
