Philosophical Implications of Empirically Informed Ethics

dimanche, 28 mars 2010 - from lundi, 29 mars 2010 to mercredi, 31 mars 2010 University of Zurich (Switzerland)

Zurich of University, Research Priority Programm Ethics

Recently, empirical sciences (e.g. psychology, neuroscience, sociology and economics) have shown an increasing interest in moral judgement and moral behaviour. This raises important methodological and normative questions concerning the extent to which experimental approaches in ethics can help in explaining and justifying moral judgement and moral behaviour.

The workshop Philosophical Implications of Empirically Informed Ethics brings both empirical and normative researchers in order to discuss the implications of empirical research for moral philosophy. The workshop is structured along the thematic streams “moral competences”, “moral reasoning” and “moral decision making” and includes the following speakers:

•Prof. Sarah Brosnan (Primatology), Georgia State University, Atlanta/GA, USA

•Prof. Johannes van Delden (Applied Ethics), UMC Utrecht, div. Julius Centrum, Netherlands

•Prof. Hauke Heekeren (Neuroscience & Emotions), FU Berlin / Arbeitsbereich Emotionspsychologie und affektive Neurowissenschaft, Germany

•Prof. Shaun Nichols (Philosophy), Department of Philosophy, University of Arizona, Tucson/AZ, USA

•Prof. Jesse Prinz (Philosophy), CUNY Graduate Center, New York City/NY, USA

•Prof. Erich Witten (Social Psychology), Institute of Social Psychology, University of Hamburg, Germany

The workshop which will have a limited number of participants, intends to provide an open atmosphere that is favourable to interdisciplinary discussions

Young scientists working in this field (empirical researchers and philosophers/ethicists) are kindly invited to submit a proposal for an oral or poster presentation during the work-shop. Note that we can only accept a limited number of proposals. Those whose proposals are accepted can apply for a partial refunding of their expenses.

Please send a short abstract of your proposal including your CV before December 31st 2009 to christen@ethik.uzh.ch. You will be informed before January 31st 2010, whether we can include your contribution into the workshop. You may contact one of the organiz-ers in order to get additional information.
