Causation and reduction (Workshop with Philip Pettit)
Causation and reduction (Workshop with Philip Pettit)
from Thursday, 26 November 2009 to Saturday, 28 November 2009 University of Lausanne (Switzerland)The notions of causation and reduction are closely related in contemporary metaphysics. For instance, a well known argument claims that if mental states were not identical with and thus reducible to brain states, they could not be causally efficacious. The aim of this workshop is to assess the causal theory of properties and to employ this theory in order to develop functional reduction into a fully-fledged, but conservative reduction that pays heed to the characteristics of biological and mental states in a physical world.
