Saturday, 2nd of October:
In this talk I will point out the usefulness of taking a multilevel approach to Evolutionary Developmental Biology (EvoDevo). Multilevel causal models (that take into account both upward and downward directions of causation as well as different time scales) can shed light on the complex phenomenology that occurs at the interface of evolutionary and developmental processes. I will focus on natural selection and developmental constraints and I will argue that they are not opposite but complementary evolutionary factors that operate as causes linking diverse levels of biological organization. My proposal evades the usual causal dichotomy proximate/ultimate, while it promotes an integrative conceptual framework for EvoDevo.
Location:
We'll meet in the seminar room L208, on the 2nd floor of 4, rue de Candolle -- that's where the department is on the 4th floor (see below).
